Got my old laptop to boot up.  Turns out the hard drive had developed some bad sectors, and hence Windows XP won’t boot completely (since two Saturdays ago, I get a blue screen of death right smack in the middle of each bootup attempt).

And the darn thing won’t read when plugged in a desktop via USB enclosure (or IDE adaptor), so I couldn’t back up my files that way.  So as soon as I was able to boot up at the office, I backed up all my files over the network (command-line, of course, since Explorer kept on crashing).

The laptop’s running now, but it’s still not 100% fixed.  There are still quirks here and there (like opening an Explorer.exe window will crash explorer–the task bar–and bring out Dr. Watson).  Gotta replace the hard drive soon–there are signs of impending doom, methinks.

For one who’s grown used to bringing along a laptop almost everywhere, especially for mobile people like myself, it sure is a change to live without having your very own computer nearby at all times.

And it’s quite difficult for a compulsive blogger because you can’t just blog wherever you may be situated unless you have a computer nearby or on hand (moblogging, anyone?).

At least I got the incentive to re-build my old pentium-IV class desktop lying around at home (the power supply and motherboard aren’t defective, after all!).

Gas prices too high? Go the extra mile with the green liter.
