I arrived home with a flat cellphone battery the other night, and as I was turning it on while charging yesterday morning, the SIM got blocked (perhaps the phone’s “enter” button suddenly got stuck and keyed in blank PINs thrice in succession. Unfortunately, I seem to have lost my PUK slip, and my only recourse was to try those cellphone shops in the malls (or the Greenhills bazaars) if they could retrieve the PUK.
Unfortunately, no one was able to do that. I decided, instead to get myself a new SIM and a new phone to come with it, and visited Memo Express (an official distributor of various brands like Nokia, Motorola, SonEricsson, Samsung). I was thinking about getting a Motorola SLVR L7, but it would cost me PHP 10,000. Even if I could pay for that on zero-percent interest installments, I decided against it, since I’m no longer much for higher-end phones these days.
I just need something with basic functionalities, since I now rely on iCal and Google calendar for my scheduling needs. My ToDo lists are mostly in iCal and web-based apps, too. And I especially need something that I wouldn’t have to fumble with while driving (easy-to-activate/one-touch built-in speakerphone is good).
So I decided to get a Nokia 1112 for PhP 2,300 (with Globe SIM and one-year warranty). It’s small, easy to use, has a week-long battery life and won’t break the bank. I point out on bCellphones some key reasons why I think this one is a cool phone, despite the lack of capabilities or features that its more expensive brethren can offer.
Here are some shots of the 1112

I have to update all my calling cards and web contact details, since I’ll probably won’t be able to have my old SIM unblocked. My new number is +639275360123.

1Ah yes. Those good, ever-so-reliable lower-end phones. Sure reminds me of that living relic Nokia 3210 I had for 5 years.
That’s my grudge against newer-model phones, they have tons of features, which you really don’t need or use with the kind of lifestyle we ordinary Pinoys have, but their battery life was given little improvement. Plus, their quite fragile inside-out. Drop one from your chest-level, it’s dead.
It’s like the way they make printers these days, disposable.

2Right, I agree with Jhay. I had several high-end phones but I end up using my old phones.
I remember my N70 which fell off the stairs of PBCom. I had it checked for repair but I will spend almost the same amount as a brand new phone’s cost.
So, now, I ended up waiting for my Company to Provide me a new phone since they won’t be able to contact me without a mobile phone. Hehe.. and yes they did, provided me with O2 XDA II Atom with Globe Platinum Line, nice! But, wait there’s a BUT, I need to be available via mobile phone 7 days a week and 12 hours a day! What a downside! But at least they provided for me.

4@Jhay, you’re right in saying Pinoys’ lifestyles don’t really call for high-end mobile phones. Whenever I see people with expensive phones at the malls or elsewhere, I usually think I could probably buy a laptop for the price of that phone! I’d rather go for something I can be productive with, such as a laptop or some other tool, rather than a mobile phone. That’s unless I’ll really be needing and using the high-tech capabilities of that gadget in the line of my work.
@Carlo, I end up using the low-end ones because of the no-frills operation! Some high end phones I’ve encountered were too difficult to use or too slow. I’m okay with difficult, but the fast texter/typist that I am, I want something that can catch up with my line of thought when composing a message!
As for being on call, well, that’s the price we have to pay for being connected, heheh.
@Vance, Smart used to do that, and I think they still do. But Globe doesn’t help out with PUK problems!

5Globe doesn’t help with PUK problems? Why’s that? As long as the customer can provide a valid proof of purchase/ownership, it’s their responsibility to help him/her out.
I’ve never really had the urge to buy the newest-model phones in the market..for example, my nokia 7610 was only given to me as a gift, and if not for that, I would’ve been still using my 3310!

6Me, right after me and my wife was robbed. I didn’t got to have a cellphone for 2 years. how’s that? it’s just that after someone offered me a 3315 for 1000 pesos which I instantly grabbed, i would have still no cellphone until today
and a bonus, if it gets robbed again, so what. Plus, my baby gets to played w/ my phone w/o me worrying if it drops or thrown out. diba?

7I had a 5110 for about 3 years.. maybe more… i had to give it up when the battery, screen and incoming call problems became too much to bear. Call and text – the main function of cell phones. all the other features are just gravy…
And if ever I’ll upgrade, with the current technology, i wouldn’t want a phone with a camera.. text editing capability maybe.. email check, yes.. camera.. probably not.
Unless it’s free =)

8I think a good rule of thumb would be to stick with what you need, and what you can afford. Wait, that’s just common sense!

10I’ve found nuggets of wisdom here as I am weighing my options as whether avail of the retention program with smart or not.
Have been using Smart’s Amazing Phone (1 and 2) for 4 years having obtained it for free via consumable plans.
Am eligible for retention program now—N73 (plus cash) for my plan 1800 and a Motorola 3G phone for my plan 800. But am carefully weighing my options before being bound for another 2 years contract. Though, that is our actual consumption (even more if I am on pre-paid).
I need 2 more phones for my kids. They have separate schedules at school and communicating with them has become a great need. We are thinking of letting them have our old phones, but our present phone is a little bit complicated. though my 9 year old son can operate my smart phone with ease and familiarity. My 7 year old daughter can not.
Besides, TnT have a promo until Dec 31. Buy 2 Nokia 11something phones for only 3,995.

11Sonnie, I suggest you go with the basic phones for the kids. Even if your 9-year old can operate the Smartphone with ease, it’s the reliability I’d be worried about. Nokia 11xx batteries last long (up to about a week, with normal use), and they rarely hang or freeze. I’d already been able to master navigating around my SAP1 (smart amazing phone, first generation), but there were still some times that it would freeze, hang, restart, and even turn off by itself. Of course, the hardware itself is already old (sometimes the joystick wouldn’t work properly, and sometimes the battery is loose).

12i suggest you to get them a cheap phone with SUN Telco carrier, it is cheaper than smart and globe… I think 350 a month for their cheapest plan which is unlimited call and text. you can also get one for yourself, btw i forgot to add that the 350plan has a free motorola phone. It is the cheapest way to communicate even though hindi kalakasan ang signal.

13the 1112 would be perfect for me if not for the lack of WCDMA support. im forced to buy these lousy and slow 3g phones.

20Just got myself one about 4 hours ago. Sweet!
Since I gave up the corporate world and the company-issued high-end phone to go with it, I went back to using a basic phone (1100) and it’s very liberating. It’s so simple, easy and fast to use. And come to think of it, I really didn’t miss the features offered by my former high end phone.
But my 1100 had to retire and to my surprise, I still was able to trade-it-in (suppose to be P800 but went down for P400 because of a defect) and got a new 1112. I was mislead though, since it said in Nokia.com that it had a calendar, but the calendar feature was only integrated with the Reminders. Well I could live with.
I like the backlight, very bright, the tones, the keypad’s response, shortcuts and yes it has speakerphone. A very well spent P1,900.

21I particularly like the speakerphone functionality. I’m thinking of getting myself a 3G-enabled phone sometime soon, though. But I will only be using that as a modem for my laptop (so I’ll get the cheapest unit). I’m still fond of the simplicity of the 1112.

26I’ve got an Amazon gift certificate burning holes in my pocket,
and I want to get the most bang for my buck.
Enter the Secret Amazon Web Pages:
http://tinyurl.com/38sojf
This is where you’re going to find the “latest sales, rebates, and limited-time offers” from
Amazon, and you can score some pretty deep discounts if you’re a savvy shopper.
Next, there’s the special Sale link. This is open every Friday, and ONLY on Fridays.
You can find the same good discounts here as you would in hidden Deals, although some
Fridays you can really get lucky and make off like an Amazon bandit – I’ve seen discounts
there as low as 75% off sticker price.

It’s a interesting video I made to show off the Dervish’s dance from the Guild-Wars night-fall weekend.
The dance the dervish does is the same one that Christoper Walken did in the video for Fatboy Slims’ – Weapon of choice music video (hence the music used)
