Bayantel / SkyDSL is Really Slow These Days

My DSL connection has been really slow for the past two weeks or so. Some colleagues of mine who also use SkyDSL are also reporting similar problems. Thing is, we people rely on the Internet to work, do business, and earn money.

Here’s an email I recently sent to SkyDSL customer service. If you have been experiencing slow speeds on your SkyDSL or Bayantel DSL (essentially the same) accounts, please don’t hesitate to call them up or send email. Their address is csdip@bayantel.com.ph .

Dear Bayantel/SkyDSL,

I’ve been having very slow speeds and unreliable connections on several of my SkyDSL accounts since about two weeks ago. I’ve been getting very high latency and low speeds, and this has badly affected my productivity (most of my work is Web related). I called up 411-2000 but the CSR I talked to said there were no outages or maintenance operations being done on the network. Still, I’ve been getting bad performance, regardless of machine (both PCs and Macs) I use, and on two locations.

Here are some details.

On both my apartments, I use Sky DSL bundled in with my telephone subscription. One 768kbps and one 384kbps.

768K – username (xxxxx). tel no (xxx-xxxx)
384K – username (xxxxx). tel no (xxx-xxxx)

Both of these are along Maginhawa St. in Teachers Village East Quezon City.

Here is a sample traceroute output (to gmail.google.com, one of the sites I find quite slow these days). I was asked by the CSR to send these over for your analysis.

Traceroute has started …

traceroute to gmail.l.google.com (209.85.139.107), 64 hops max, 40 byte packets

And here are some speedtest.net results.

The first one is using the Bayantel server in QC:

Download speed: 763 kbps
Upload speed: 701 kbps
Latency: 106 ms

The second one is using a Hong Kong server:

Download speed: 50 kbps
Upload speed: 41 kbps
Latency: 580 ms

This third one is using a San Jose, CA server:

Download speed: 132 kbps
Upload speed: 126 kbps
Latency: 243 ms

Notice the big speed difference. With this, I think we can perhaps initially rule out any problem from my end to your end (meaning between my computer/s and Bayantel) because connection from here to the Bayantel server (using speedtest) is fast. But connection to the rest of the world is slow.

I hope you can help out with resolving this problem. This is particularly unfortunate to people like myself who rely on the Internet to do work and business. And I have had several colleagues complaining of lost productivity due to slow speeds.

Regards,

Angelo Racoma

I would suggest that you consider Bayan DSL and Globe DSL. I would also suggest a wired connection. Wireless broadband is still at its infancy and is too easily disrupted by unwanted interferences.

I was the first user of cable broadband but there are too many problems connected with illegal connections on Cable TV. It has thus become very difficult for cable broadband providers to maintain a consistent service and this unreliabilty negates any advantages these companies may initially have had on speed.

I would like to add that if being online 24/7 is a necessity, it would be far better to subscribe to 2 different providers so that you will have connection redundancy.

I am currently subscribed to Bayan DSL, and am using the Globe 3G HDSPA as my backup. The latter also provides me with online connectivity when I am not at home.

To lower my overall communication bill, I subscribed to the 384kbps service from Bayan DSL rather than go for a faster connection. The monthly service is P900. I was surprised to discover that 384kbps more than meets my requirement for regular use. Before that, I had assumed that I needed to get at least double that speed.

I also subscribed to Bayan’s packaged landline phone which cost only P300 per month. A standard PLDT phone would have cost P700. So far, the Bayan landline phone service is as good as PLDT and I have had no problem in calling any PLDT or Globe landlines. I tested the landline against our other PLDT landline phone here and I saw no difference in the time it takes to dial a PLDT landline.

The Globe 3G cost P2,000 per month. The cost is higher than Bayan DSL but in addition to providing redundancy, it has the unmatched advantage of mobile nationwide connectivity whenever I am out of home.

So for P3,200 a month, I have Bayan DSL, Globe 3G Mobile Wireless Broadband via HDSPA, and a Bayan landline phone. Its not a bad setup and I have yet to suffer being offline since I adopted this setup many months now.

I’m in Baguio and Globe DSL/Zpdee nor Globe 3G HDSPA I think is not yet here. I asked some of the users of PLDT myDSL here and they said it is OK, that they’re getting speed they’ve subscribed to. But I heard some also telling that PLDT is slow and they get disconnected sometimes up to 3 days. I am also considering Bayantel DSL but I don’t know much of their services here. My friend told me to subscribe to Skycable Zpdee and maybe it would be much better because of its bandwidth and not necessarily the distance unlike PLDT DSL considering a center to the subscriber’s location. I am not really that technical but I do compare what these IPs best offer regarding with their speed, availability of connections on my line of work and with the least possibility of damaging my computer.

I believe that the Globe 3G Mobile Broadband Broadband with HSDPA (not HDSAP, my mistake) is available in Baguio. I have not actually tried this in Baguio but its pretty much available in most of the cities in the Visayas and Mindanao that I have travelled to where Globe has a presence. Check it out there.

Please note though that this 3G connection is via USB or via PCMCIA Card and not via an Ethernet. So unless you have a way of sharing this connection to other PCs, the Globe 3G Mobile Broadband connection is pretty much a one terminal connection.

I do not have any info whether Bayan DSL has a site in Baguio. But you may want to check with it or its affiliates as its service would most likely be better than PLDT.

Good luck.

Larry, thanks for your responses/additions on my queries regarding my internet connection and IPs.
I hope I could be able to have good internet connection this time, not that fast but as much as possible no internet interruptions/disconnections whatsover. Thanks.

Its been a pleasure. I have learned much as there were also many in the past who generously shared their time and their knowledge. I am simply passing on what I have received.

Should you opt for the Globe 3G Mobile Broadband, Under “Settings” then “Connection Type”, click on “3G only” as Globe tends to default to the much slower GPRS. Only when 3G is not available in a specific area would I recommend opting for the “3G Preferred” setting.

The connection speed to 3G is displayed at 3.6mbps while GPRS is limited to about 256kbps or less. The actual throughput of 3G of course does not quite reach 3.6mbps but its considerably faster than GPRS.

Pax.

I have been experiencing the same problem with my SkyDSL connection and it has affected my business. I’m into work at home business using the ineternet. I have a hard time connecting on line everytime I open my computer. I cannot establish full connectivity and the speed is very slow. I have a Smart Bro connected also and tried it for for one month but I have to relocate it to my brother’s place in Lagro (from Project 4) and mentained my SkyDSL account. Smart Bro is always connected once I open my computer. My brother in Lagro also is not experiencing any problem with Smart Bro. I tried calling Bayantel regarding this problem but still the connection is very bad.

I would like to suggest that you check the wires from where Bayan/Sky conects office all the way to where your modem connects. If you have many wire taps for extension or if the line has been cut in several placed but were not properly spliced, this can cause a problem manifested as an intermittent off-again on-again connection.

I had problems of intermittent DSL connection until I removed all the wire taps for the extension, and tapped the DSL modem closest to where the wire for the phone/DSL enters the residence. This eliminated the problem.

Good luck.

Sorry for the typo. This is what I mean:

I would like to suggest that you check the wires from where Bayan/Sky connects in your office (near the utility pole) all the way to where your modem connects (inside your office).

To test whether the cable in your office/home is really the source of the problem, you can try using a temporary direct cable connection from where Bayan/Sky makes the tap all the way to your DSL modem. If the problem persists despite this new and direct cable connection, then the problem is really with Bayan/Sky.

Good luck.

Hi to All! Could anybody help me?

I am subscribed to Sky DSL plan 256 before and then upgraded it to 384 (same price).

My Problem is that there is almost no change to my speed ( only 260+kbps on tests) I thought that maybe my slow computer is the factor. (windows xp celeron 2.13 ghz, 512 ddr ram). But i tried to ask my friend who is also a sky dsl subscriber to test my username and password ( he has a Intel dual core 3.0 ghz, 1 gb ram) and it also marked 260+kbps (480-500 kbps on sod).

I tested his Username and passord on my pc and it marked 330+ kbps! (700+ on sod) (were both on the same plan, 384 kbps). So i sent bayantel an e-mail but they called and told me that my speed (260 kbps) is just on the allowable range for 384 kbps (they told me 50 kbps and above)and there is nothing that they can do about it.

So hows that! Do i need to wait for my speed to drop as fast as dial-up for them to fix my account??? how i wish to turn back the time and just subscribe to them after the 384 kbps announcement!

Thanks Mr. Racoma! Tinawagan ko po yung 4112000 then i told them my problem and they checked my account. The representative told me that there is an upgrade on my account but maybe it is not yet configured so they asked me to wait. Then, they told me that my account was reset and asked me to test it. I got 360+ kbps on the test! Thankyou so much! I think i called the wrong guys because it is the number for bayantel dsl, not sky dsl. Thankyou so much! I will advertise your site to my friends! thanks thanks! thanks!

i racked my brains from morning to afternoon thinking there might be a virus in my computers.after calling bayantel (30min),i was able to get through.i extracted the info that there is an international gatelink cable problem(underwater) so internet (all bayantel subscribers) is so slow.i pointed out that bayantel has to publicly announce regarding this problem resulting from technicalities to avoid trouble and inconvenience among their subscribers as part of their responsibility since we are paying for their services.yet when i checked bayantel dsl speed meter, it gave 1.5mbps speed.it’s fraud. deceiving clients that nothing is wrong with their system. transparency is and open communication should be practiced. since bayantel is owned and operated by owner of ABS-CBN, it is somehow shocking to note that the broadcasting company, prestigious and famous as the firm that helps and reaches out to the “poor, victims of felony, and underprivileged” could muster brazen and utter fraud, deceiving and covering up “incompetencies and technical malignancies in dsl system. not only are they deceiving their clientele but they are “covering up” faulty equipment by telling their clients that “nothing is wrong” with their system and it’s probably “faulty equipment or computers” which contributed to the slowness of speed of the dsl.
cut the crap. the filipinos are an intelligent people, ever-persevering yet there are limitations to our being “passive” with your failure to uphold your integrity as a dsl provider company. you should check what your company stands for and what it means to uphold one’s reputation in the industry.

I’ve been a bayan-skydsL subscriber for almost 3yrs and i think they are performing well with delivery of their service. Whenever i encounter a problem, csr would always advise what to do and tell what the problem and it is true. I have 1 bayan DSL account in my province bundled with Voip-Manila number, 1 DSL account here in Manila, and 1 SPAN-bayan wireless.
This is my advise whenever you encounter problems:
1. DSL Slow connection – Check your PC for applications flooding your memory and bandwidth. This can be done by using stand-alone PC, bandwidth/ping/latency test and point-to point test.
2. DSL Slow connection on multiple computers-shared via server or NAT router – test using stand-alone PC(isolating router). Request for a replacement of modem (Huawei modem is not good for shared set-up it was tested with intermittent connection, ask for ZTE or Aztech)
3. If slow problem is recurring and not resolved, ask a tech visit and ask them how many E1 connection they are using on their DSLAM. Most of intermmitent/slow connections are caused by congested DSLAM. Bayan is on the process of upgrading to 10G network thus eliminating per-E1 link on DSLAMs w/c hopefully would make speed better.
4. For frequent downtimes w/ DSL light not sync – this maybe caused by
a.physical line problem – ask the techs to test end-to end line from your home to the node for possible open, corroded, or grounded line that causes so many errors on ADSL. If yo are able to access the modem, check for the incrementing errors on the ADSL line, a fast increment is not a good sign.
b. stolen cable – caused by scavengers who cut and melt copper cables for money (usually restoration is quick, depends on the first user to complain w/c will trigger the checking)
c. Commercial power failure on your area – most nodes are backed-up w/ batteries w/c wouldnt run for more than an hour.
d. Fiber optic breaks, optical redundancy and mux problem – where all voice and data traffic passes and if not well protected on a redundant link, downtime is certain.
e. International link problem – usually caused by international equipt failure, break on submarine cable going to the internet servers. Usually this problem is not frequent and restoration takes some time and international traffic will be routed to protection links w/c could result to a less than 100% original speed performance – this causes slow connection to international sites.

5. For bayan SPAN users – the service is good and cheap but as of the moment it is not that stable. Although problems doesnt happen most of the time, I recommend to bring with you the GSM as a back-up. Bayan SPAN-internet uses CDMA 1x and asper test 150kb is attainable but usually not guaranteed. Maybe not too long after stabilizing the network it would offer speeds up to 2gig or more(CDMA technology is on the process of evolution to ethernet speeds), much promising than Globe or SMARTs GSM. This is also the reason why Globe, Smart, Digitel Sun is switching from GSM to CDMA for their wireless landlines and broadband internet.

6. If ever you encounter problems with their service, jst report and ask for a trouble ticket number. This way every problem will be documented and rebates will not be contestable.

Lastly, if you are not really satisfied and you find the service poor in your area always think twice because other providers encounter similar problems w/c could be much worse. Sometimes performance is dependent on your location, on what node subscribers are terminated. Maybe make a survey first before deciding.
As a consumer, it is important to be aware and understand how these things work. For some cases, internet link redundancy would be a great idea if your work is dependent on this technology.

Good luck.

Hi everyone.. I just sent my DSL application to Bayantel and when the technician came the next day to install the connection we were having a really bad transfer rate.. when you launch a browser it takes about 3-5 minutes maybe more to open the homepage.. I was really enthusiastic at first but now I am having my doubts.. any advice people? Thanks!

Hi Ken,

Check your physical connection. The info provided earlier by rb Manila is very detailed and should help.

Then too there is this other info you may not have. I do not know if this will help but I have also experienced very slow response from my DSL connection from Bayantel for some sites in the last few days.

If I did not have a second provider, I would have pinned the blame on Bayantel. But it would seem that the problem is not just with Bayantel as I also experienced the same thing using the Globe 3G with HSDPA connection.

I then checked with my brother who also lives in Quezon City. He also has a Globe landline DSL and a Bayantel landline DSL. He confirmed having the same problem with both Globe and Bayantel. He also has a Globe 3G with HSDPA and this too was very slow.

hay.. isa lang talaga ang explanation ng bayantel. yung CIR nga, as someone said earlier. tumawag ako kanina sa bayantel, and they said to me na hindi talaga pure 384kbps ang marerecieve ko dahil sa CIR nga. and sabi nila, besides, yung advertised speed eh limit daw yun. which means we’re paying for the limit, not the speed. hell be damned, but as far as they’re concerned, they’re providing you UP TO (not as is) what speed you’ve paid for. regardless if you’re getting 384kbps or 1bps. I hope someone comes forward with a petition to change the policies of these broadband providers. so far wala pa talaga masyado involvement ang gobyerno dito eh. we need more laws on electronic networks here in the philippines.

by the way, para dun sa mga nakakaexperience na google lang ang napupuntahan nilang site, try restarting your broadband modem. madalas talaga mahina ang cold start ng internet connections eh, so a restart would most probably fix the problem. and as for the router problem.. I’m still bugged by that kind of explanation, since routers work by managing the traffic used by a network, so it’s supposed to avoid slowdown unlike hubs and switches. so, I don’t know, maybe a nice tweak or two would fix it, hopefully..

well i have my sky dsl more than a year. at fisrt the connection is good. then its getting terrible nowadays getting tired of always reporting bad connection always the same problem over and over. (arent they doing something for the same problems?) like now the connection is unreliable always disconnects, online games are no good, getting high latency. There a times i can surf faster using a dial-up connection, hate it or not there are no good ISP providers. BS! My location to the Bayan Operation is just one tricycle away and my link is so bad. i’ve been having troubles with bayantel lately. frequent disconnections happen for 10-15 minutes especially if i upload big chunks of data (around ~10 MB maybe). sometimes i couldn’t even get an IP from their servers (usually happens from 12MN to around early morning). if this happens again tonight, i’m gonna switch to another ISP.

i’ve been a bayantel sky dsl subscriber for 14 months now. at first they had excellent DSL.. As i cafe shop owner i rely my productivity to the internet speed i get.I have noticed as time passed since march this year i am having trouble with my DSL i get slow connection..and time to time it gets fixed and then after 3 weeks the speed goes bad again…Since july I could no longer level up my character in RAN online for i experience latency that i could not play the game effeciently..I would get 100-200kbps speed during daytime and its really hard to run a internet cafe with that speed..For i am paying the supposed 1MB speed. but starting last week it really got so bad that it would take me mins just to get a speed result and i’d get 23kbps.the tech told me that theres a problem of data supply.. and even during 3AM my speed is at max 200kbps..Whats going on??? since i have a static IP they said nahihigupan ako ng speed.. wow im paying 3k a month for my own benefit and somebody else is enjoying what im paying for???how lame is that.. and bayantel said the lowest i should get is 64 as for the CIR c’mon lage nlng ba gnun im paying 3k a month for a damn connection like a dial-up.. bayantel sucks!! i would never encourage dsl applicants here to subscribe to bayantel…cz they blow

I understand what you mean. My connection with Bayan DSL has been very erratic, ranging from good (used to be excellent) to non-existent, which is my current situation as I write this.

I am sending this from a Globe 3G HSDPA … but its really crawling and seems more like a dial-up in many instances when I am forced to use it inside the house bec. Bayan DSL is down.

The problem though is as bad as Bayan DSL may get, the other choices available are even worse. PLDT is a non-starter. Globe used to be good, but now really sucks according to my brother. His “free” VOIP phone hasn’t been working since more than 3 months ago … no calls, no dial tone even.

I still recommend having redundant connections …. with at least a dual and maybe even triple connections if you can afford it.

Your plight highlights the problems that most broadband subscribers seem to have. The solution though does not seem to consist of getting a new provider as PLDT is worse, and Globe while good before has now become at best mediocre. I used to be a subscriber of Destiny but that always went out the window when the connection became worse than a dial-up. My Bayan DSL goes from good (used to be excellent) to none existent at some times of the day.

I believe that the solution consist of getting a second, and even a third provider, and getting a proxy server or a twin router to handle multiple connections. This redundancy is the only way that I have managed to attain a continuous, if sometimes slow Internet connection.

@sahara

i thought that bursting connection would ONLY just apply for those have dynamic IP. It just like having a PPPoE connection (dynamic), our subscription is shared by 16 subscribers.

If we do MATH for your subscription,
1000 / 16 = 62.5 or rougly 64Mbps.

the question is, Why would I be going to a STATIC IP if the technology (design) they been using is just the same.

They’ve changed their name from SkyDSL to BayanDSL.

But the most appropriate is BAGALDSL.

I think it depends really on the location coz here in Abad Santos, Tondo, Manila im getting Similar problems with Bayantel and not with PLDT. In Bayantel with plan 384kbps im getting only 140kbps anytime except 2:00AM to 5:00AM(madaling araw akong puyat)w/c I get 240kbps in fairness. Also, my ping is 450 to 560 Average peak and offpeak (SOD is on all the time) which is so comparing sa mga results ng connection to Quezon City server nila. But when I switched to PLDT, everything is working perfect until now. I’m getting 512 kbps which is what im paying for (512kbps plan) and my ping is so fast (130 to 150 Average)even in online gaming(GRAW2 MP). I remember a PLDT lineman says to me that the DSL line in our area is the newest to facilitate new subscriber which means it may not last long.

Ako naman walang internet since January. Tapos ilang linggo akong nangungulit sa Bayantel. Tapos pag kinabitan ng router may problema. Sabi ako daw may problema. Ano kayang mabuting gawin?

Dear Bayantel / Skydsl

I am having a hardtime getting connection to the internet these past days. I have reported this to their customer their reply was, my problem will be reported to their technician to check my connections. However, everytime their technician will arrived at home, connection seems to be ok so no repairs nor checking will be done. I guess they have an internal problem which they do not disclose to their subscrbers. I think this is unfair for all of us. We deserve to know what really is going on beacuse for me, what is important is “honesty” not an alibi.

I would like also to inform all bayantel dsl users (in case you are not aware) that there is a REBATE OF P500.00 per day if the connection will not be up within 24hrs after you have reported the complain to their customer assistance.

I’m sure that bayatel is doing their best to address the problem but they must also give an advisory to their customers. Our time is being waisted trying to get connections isntead of doing some other important thisngs to do. Some subscribers are dependent on internet connections in dealing with their clients. Opportunities are being lost, time is being waisted. Is this the way you are dealing to your customers? I would like to reiterate again that “HONESTY” is very important.

Hi Guys,

I am from QC near Munoz area and enrolled BayanDSL. Naku, we’ll see… Ngayon ko palang makikita. Kasi kanina, pumunta sila sa house to set up my connection. Ayaw maconnect. Yung DSL led ayaw umilaw. Tas babalik na lang daw sila… e Kaso may pasok ako ngayon. Tignan natin kung gagana na pag uwi ko. hehehe.

Good luck for me. Sana yung place ko has no problem with the connection. I mean speed

Hi Anna,
Just try your luck, malay mo may himalang makuha mo yung subscribed speed mo. Like me, natsambahan ko lang sigurong bagong bukas yung linya ng PLDT dito sa min, kasi yung Bayantel e congested na. (Abad Santos, Tondo, Manila here) More luck to you…

Yes it has been slowong down and it’s really annoying especially cause we use it for business purposes. If Bayantel won’t clean up its act soon, many of its customers will look for other ISPs, in droves.

ganito na ba ang bayantel ngayon??? kasi almost 1 week na, na twing 7pm nawawala ang internet connection sa shop namin hangang umaga… luge negosyo kung lagi ganito, nagbabayad kami ng on-time at buo amounting to P3,200.00 monthly, pero ang serbisyo nyo kulang, pinuntahan mismo namin ang opisina nyo dito sa naga city para humingi ng tech support, sinabing pupuntahan para i-check ang linya pero lumubog ang araw na namuti ang mata namin kahihintay, ano ito lokohan o biruan we’re talking of business here and obcorzzzz money is involved here, kung magpapatuloy ang ganitong siste, cgurado magsasara ang shop namin, our business is totally dependent to internet connection that you’ve provided, kaya sana naman….... malaking pera ang nawawala samin sa twing nawawala ang internet connection sa amin…
