Blog trends and statistics

Yuga blogs on measuring blog growth, musing on statistics and trends that a blogger should keep up with in considering how well his/her blog has fared over a certain period of time.
I’d like to add that one such statistic is the ranking in the blog listings/directories that have sprung about, including Yuga’s very own Pinoy Top Blogs project.
While the ranking in that particular top blogs listing uses traffic (counting the unique visitors per month) as a proxy for popularity, what’s good to watch out for is the variety in trending across blogs of different topics.
In the past month, I noticed that the J Spot had been in the twenties (ranking number 26), even surpassing supposedly more popular (and more controversial) blogs like Inside PCIJ, and fellow tech bloggers whose publications I can say are perhaps more well-read than my own. The same period also saw the rise in popularity of the showbiz blogs (Pinoy Big Brother, anyone) in the top positions, a trend that Manolo Quezon noted in a blog post entitled Pinoy Big Blogger (inspired, undoubtedly, by man-blogger Mikey’s wrote “interview” with Sam of Pinoy Big Brother).
Showbiz trumps political blogs. O tempore! O mores! Oh, captain, my captain: Gin Capitan! Tanduay, the number one rhum. Drink Moderately. Tagay na, Pinoy Big Brother! Ah, yes. That’s the subject. Let’s unite stream-of-conciousness writing with the topic.
But now, the politically-oriented blogs are back on top. Well, back on top with the showbiz-oriented ones, at least, and of course those on interesting niche topics such as food and lifestyle. I was quite disappointed that the J Spot had fallen down to 49th place. Well, at least it’s still on the front page. That’s tech writing for you!
