Blogging is the new digital handshake.

This is pretty cool. From a Wall Street Journal article:
firms in the west are quick to catch on this new trend in corporate
P.R. Yes, they do get it. And they learn fast.
Hopefully we’ll be saying bye-bye
to the flogs of the past (flogs being “fake” blogs–blogs that have
been authored using fictitious identities with the intent to proxy for
a real corporate blogger) and hello to corporate blogs with genuine, honest-to-goodness authorship.
“A small but growing number of
businesses are hiring people to write blogs, otherwise known as Web
logs, or frequently updated online journals. Companies are looking for
candidates who can write in a conversational style about timely topics
that would appeal to customers, clients and potential recruits.”
I’m wondering when this trend will catch on
locally. And I’m wondering if local firms can afford to pay the
equivalent value (or the real value, adjusted for cost-of-living and
other factors) of the US$50,000 to 70,000 annual compensation for
corporate bloggers.
Nominally, and assuming a US$1 : PhP55 exchange rate, that’s PhP 2.79
million to PhP 3.85 million a year. To put things in perspective,
that’s PhP 232 to 320 thousand per month, which is about or even more
than the annual salary of the average Filipino white-collar worker!
I can foresee business schools setting up Blogging 101 courses. Or am I being too optimistic?
