We’ll be moving to a bigger apartment within the month, and I’m worried about connectivity. Being able to share the DSL connection via WiFi at my parents’ place here in our existing apartment (within the same compound) is sure easy. But now that my family needs a bigger—and better—living space, I’ll have to take care of these things over again. Signing up for Bayantel/Sky DSL was easy because I’d been a loyal subscriber and our line has been running for about ten years now.
Here’s the thing. The new apartment is only three houses down the street from this existing one (Maginhawa Street, Teachers Village). So I can theoretically share the DSL connection if i set up a WiFi rig powerful/high enough to reach across houses. But I think I would still prefer getting a new Bayantel DSL+landline combo (which goes for only PhP 2,000 for the 512Kbps package) since we do need the landline, and so my access would be more dependable.
However, I would have to go through Baytantel’s usual application process anew. While it could be easier for me being an existing subscriber (a loyal one at that!) I would still have to submit documents and wait a few weeks for processing. And that’s hoping there is still DSL provisioning open in the area.
I could go for CDMA/3G/HSDPA based connectivity, but I don’t think Globe or Smart have opened that to individual clients yet (Hint! Hint!). I could also probably go cable, but that’s more expensive. Dialup? Out of the question.
Leeched WiFi? I tried it, and no one runs a hotspot in the area! Of course, if it were me I’d be willing to share, just like what I do here within our present compound.
I want something that can be easily done, without the need for much hassle, particularly document-wise. And I want something reliable and fast—my work depends on it. I don’t want something that just dies out on me whenever the weather is bad (like Smart Bro, for instance).
Of course, it has to be easily share-able. I use a desktop and two laptops and they all need to be connected. They’re all wireless-enabled so that should be easy (I gotta buy a new router, though).
If any telecoms company would be willing to help me out here, I would appreciate any assistance or advice. I don’t need freebies, but if I get an offer, it would surely be well accepted. If not, I’m very much willing to pay—the important thing is I get connected as soon as possible! Of course, whatever service I get I would likely write about on this blog and my countless other sites, so that would serve as word of mouth marketing for you. Everyone’s happy.

1If it is available in your area, try Globe’s “Speak and Surf“. Am using it for almost a week since we moved to a condo. Wireless phone is working. Internet speed may be kind of slow for you, it ranges from 180-267 kbps.

2The 1999 plan of bayantel/skydsl has recently been upgraded to 786 kbps, meaning they probably upgraded some hardware so there should be ports available in your area. Try visiting pinoydsl.net, there are some people there who may be able to help speed up your application.
The other drawback of CDMA/3G/HSDPA is you can’t share the connection by just plugging everything to a router. You have to keep a computer on so you can share the connection.
Good luck and hopefully someone answers your call for help soon

5Andre: You’re not alone. I too am a happy PLDT DSL subscriber. We are a rare breed, aren’t we? It did take us a few weeks to get connected, but we got there and we’re happy.

6Well, I just applied with bayantel last wednesday, and until now i don’t know kung kailan ikakabit, hehe. oh well sabi namn nila til monday ang latest (wag naman busy ako noon with scholl stuff).
the next thing is call Globe hehe, they have stable connection and faster at that too… ( i’m not speaking of speak and surf)
P999 512KB Connection, and no installation fee even if you apply for Data package.
Mydestiny is also ok but morning, sometimes at the afternoon and evening speed are slow, it will reach 1 Mbps to 2 Mbps by midnight till early in the morning.

7Well, if your looking for a Router try looking for Netgear and Linksys. I heard Netgear is ok, kaso some models aren’t available locally (I think).

8Thanks for the comments, everyone! I have yet to go to Bayantel on Monday (walking distance from here, actually) to see how easy it is to apply for a line. Thing is, I’m kind of worried about having to present proofs of billing and even IDs, since all my utility bills have my current address. I don’t know how difficult it can be to present proof of billing for a new apartment (we’re not actually the first tenants), especially since it’s not under my name.
@Sonnie, how is speak & surf? I can’t share that thru a router, can I?
@kid, thanks for the info. I didn’t know that! I use a PhP 1.7k Bayantel DSL and it was originally 512Kbps. I’ll have to test to see if bandwidth has been upgraded, indeed.
@jepoy, how does one connect to a cable modem? Thru ethernet, too? I’m not so sure about cable, as I’m concerned about reliability and consistency when it comes to speed. I wouldn’t want my ‘net to crawl when there are many users already among my neighbors. But I’ll keep that as an option.
@Andre and Anne, apparently you’re among the silent majority of PLDT DSL subscribers who are satisfied!
@vance, do tell me how it goes! When I applied for Bayantel here, it took them three weeks to come and get us connected. Well, it was Christmas vacation/party season after all. But we’re an existing Bayantel subscriber, so it should’ve been easy (Actually, it was. The actual install only took a few minutes.).
I use a netgear mr214 v3 here. I can actually take it with me since it’s technically mine. But I might want to go for an upgrade (all my devices are WiFi G now).

9Netgear Gmodelno. something (hehe) is a good all around router daw. hehe sorry forgot the model no. eh.
Actually I asked for a appplication slip last tuesday and it was delivered to my house the next day (coool! also paid the initial payment sa runner nila) then kanina they installed the bayantel line. kaso yung modem installer was reschedule tom (huhuhu) kasi I wasn’t at home and The sales Agent didn’t call me up as I requested to tell me the day na ikakabit ang net ko. So ngayon waiting for the installer. can’t sleep nanaman ako nito haha. i’m still using SmartBro, Kaso papapull out ko na to by next week (pagtapos na yung contract ko and I have to pay 300 pesos for extra 10 days, grrr..)

11[...] I’m at our new apartment right now, since we’re transferring some of our stuff (hey, it’s only three houses down after all, so a gradual move would do). I was actually surveying the scene again for active WiFi hotspots and this time I brought the PowerBook, and this time I found a signal. It was a bit weak, though, and it only reached the room facing the back of the lot. Hey, at least I’m connected. And it’s at the right place, since this is where I intend to set up my new home office, anyway. [...]
