Of course, by “fags,” I mean cigarettes—you know, the Brit and Aussie slang, lest you accuse me of being homophobic or something (no comment!). Those who know me personally would know I don’t smoke (never tried). And I’m quite allergic to cigarette smoke, so I try to keep distance from smokers—at least, while they’re doing their thing, that is.
An experience yesterday (Philippine time, of course) led me to come up with this writeup on ForeverGeek. Went to Seattle’s Best to do some work, but I had no place to stay except the smoking area (I should’ve settled down first before buying coffee, as I usually do). Guess what? Most of the tables were occupied by WiFi junkies.
So what have I learned from all this? I guess this just affirms my theory that in some instances, you could indeed assume the worst from people (which was pointed out in a comment posted here)—at least in some instances. Of course, it’s probably unfair to put people at fault for enjoying the facilities. Hey, I’m also here to do the same. What I’m pointing out is that there’s probably a better alternative for establishments attracting business this way—things that could discourage abuse.
Pretty fun/light stuff.
Enjoy!

1My telephone line was disconnected upon my own request because of obnoxious phone pranks and with it was my dial-up connection. It would really be nifty if WiMax coverage is available since I do most of my work on my desktop.
The thing is, I have a USB Donggle wi-fi adapter ‘cause my aging notebook has no PCMCIA.
I was wondering, will my 802.11b/g adapter work on a WiMax 802.16? Please advise me.
Thank you..

2Dear Lex,
To answer your question, no, WiFi b/g won’t work on WiMax.
But it would help if you can point out your general location. If you’re here in my area (or actually in my country), you won’t get any WiMax coverage, and I do believe this technology is not actually used mainstream yet in most places.
At any rate, another option for you is to use some sort of HSPDA- (or even GPRS-) based connectivity. But then that would also require you to use a PC Card in most cases. What you can do then, unless providers make USB-dongles for these technologies available is get a USB-Cardbus adaptor (though not inexpensive, methinks), so you can use PC Cards on your notebook via USB.

3I see, thanks for the adivse (sigh), ‘cause I was thinking of buying another USB Donggle type of WiFi adapter. I’m not so techy about my celfon and I think I will wait until HSPDA becomes available.
I reside in Bagbag, Novaliches, Quezon City and I’m working in the City Hall complex, Quezon City. I don’t know if I should disclose my exact location ‘cause it’s still office time. hehehe…

4No prob. I think your only solutions in the meantime would involve either GPRS, HSPDA (3G) or Smart’s Bro (bad reviews!), or cable!

5I take the word “abuse” as taking advantage of somebody. When a resto is filled with people who seems to be taking advantage of what is being offered for free, e.g. WiFi connection, well perhaps from the point of view of the passers by, to see a resto filled with people could mean the food, or whatever is being served, is exquisite. To the owner of the resto, he some how gains a form of advertisement that says “my food or coffee is good, see my customers”.
Abuse the WiFi (or whatever is free) and gain a goodwill. I think that’s a marketing or an advertising strategy.
