I’ve been using this nifty feature for quite some time now, and I think people will be interested, especially those who want to save up on telephone costs. Do you know you can sign up for a US and/or UK-based number that will route calls to your computer thru VoIP?
It’s as simple as signing up for an account with FWD, downloading a SIP-enabled VoIP client, and signing up for a DID (direct international dialling) account with IPKall or CallUK.
For instance, my US number is +1-425-906-3733. If you call this number, you will be redirected to my VoIP client, which is 635397@fwd.pulver.net, or simply 635397 if you’re calling from within FWD.
If you’re in the US, you would probably spend a lot less if you call this (425) number than if you were to call my Philippine telephone number.
The catch is, you have to be online (and have to have a headset or a laptop with a mic ready) to receive calls. However, you can activate the free FWD voicemail to pick up when a call is unanswered or when you are offline. Messages will then be sent to your email as .MP3 files.
If you’re running an offshore business that caters to US or UK clients, this might come in handy. You can even route these calls to your office PABX so you can receive calls as if you had your own US number.
Making outgoing calls is trickier, as you have to subscribe with your provider to get outgoing access (this means you have to pay!). FWD and Skype allow you to dial out to 1-800 nunmbers for free, though, so you can still use this to call toll-free company hotlines.
There may be other services that allow you to set up DID numbers from other countries. Just make sure these are SIP compatible, or even better, already FWD-compatible.
Also, if you already have VoIP hardware that supports SIP (Such as a USB plug-in phone, or even a phone that plugs in directly to ethernet), having a US and UK number would be very handy!
Of course, there are other options, such as SkypeIn, but this would cost you monthly subscriptions. If you’re going for free, then the SIP+DID option would be the way to go.

2I use Vonage, the call is not always clear though even when I’m on a 2mbps DSL line, I have to stop doing everything, even a little browsing can cause the problems on the line, I find Skype a bit better.

3Skype works well even on dialup. It dynamically adjusts compression and quality depending on connection quality. SIP-based clients usually use a single codec type per call, and both ends have to support this codec.
I think the GSM codec (w/c many VoIP clients support) is good enough even at dialup speeds, but voice quality might be a bit crappy. But consider this: our GSM phones can support only a maximum of 9600bps data transmission and voice calls are okay (of course, that’s for data, but it’s probably more or less the same).

11I think UK (and some other couttries) phone numbers were available from Skype for almost a year (if not more). True, it is a pay-for service, but not very expensive.

17For US numbers the best place I have found is voxbone.com
They will terminate to most SIP providers and offer a massive range of numbers. My wife is from the US and now we have a number local to her family, they get to call us for free.

21How’s the quality of Freeworlddialup? Comparable with Skype?
J. Angelo Racoma
December 26th, 2006 at 12:36 am
22Benedict, voice quality of Skype is top grade, in my opinion. That’s because you can be sure both ends are using the same codec for compressing voice. So even if you’re on dialup, quality is still great.
With FWD, though, you’re not always sure both ends have the best possible codec, and the system cannot switch codecs on the fly. So if you have a slow connection, you’re not assured of good quality.
However, one advantage of FWD is that it uses standard SIP. So you can still communicate with users on other SIP VoIP networks.

23Thanks.. I have Sunrocket (www.sunrocket.com) which has unlimited USA and Canada Calls but I just noticed that sometimes the calls get automatically sent to Voicemail..
I hope PLDT will launch a SIP Based service as well.. Last time I checked only one company is providing a SIP Manila Number (but it is using the network of CAPWIRE) and the charge is around USD$30 per month..

25We will be launching similar services soon. It’s best to get an ATA (analog telephone adaptor) this way you don’t have to have your computer on and not get tied up sitting in one spot. The ATA will allow you to be able to walk around your house if you use a cordless phone. We’re currently testing this in the Philippines.
We’ll forward US, Canadian, UK, and the rest of these countries: ARGENTINA, BRAZIL, CANADA, CHILE, GUATEMALA, MEXICO, BELGIUM, BULGARIA, CYPRUS, CZECH REPUBLIC, DENMARK, ESTONIA, FINLAND, FRANCE, GERMANY, HUNGARY, IRELAND, ISRAEL,
ITALY, LATVIA, LITHUANIA, LUXEMBOURG, NETHERLANDS, NORWAY, POLAND, PORTUGAL, ROMANIA, SPAIN, SWEDEN, SWITZERLAN, TURKEY,
AUSTRALIA, JAPAN, and NEW ZEALAND.
Not only can Aspen forward these numbers to an ATA but if your are subscribed to one of our services, we can forward it there too. So if you have family in these countries, we can easily forward these international numbers to you.
Visit us at http://www.aspen-communication.com. What’s our advantage? Imagine if your Vonage or Sun Rocket ATA goes out? Then what? Who do call? Aspen provides customer and tech support in the Philippines.
Maraming Salamat po.

26Dreams surely are difficult, confusing, and not everything in them is brought to pass for mankind. For fleeting dreams have two gates: one is fashioned of horn and one of ivory. Those which pass through the one of sawn ivory are deceptive, bringing tidings which come to nought, but those which issue from the one of polished horn bring true results when a mortal sees them.
