Safari is based on KDE's Konqueror khtml core. Firefox can be tweaked to be less memory hungry just by editing about:config.

i've been using OSX for 5 years now, i had a falling out with Safari when i started using Opera. Sure, Opera is quite a RAM-hog - but i have a 2xDual Xeon at the office with 4GB of RAM - so it doesn't bother me at all. And at home I can use Opera on a PC, because I can't afford a MacPro. :)
