Jason Kottke, who pursued full-time blogging one year ago, is considering yet another change in career paths.
I’m not going to be asking for contributions again. Part of it has to do with the reasons outlined at the bottom of this post. I haven’t grown traffic enough or developed a sufficient cult of personality to make the subscription model a sustainable one for kottke.org…those things just aren’t interesting to me.
Looks like Jason sees different things in store for him this year. He’s throwing in the towel.
So what does this mean for pro-bloggers elsewhere? Does this mean the end of happy days? Well, Jason’s revenue model was different, in that instead of putting up ads, joining a blog network or working for a content company, he sought contributions from micropatrons. And people contributed the equivalent of quite a modest, but livable, income by American standards. That’s already in the upper income range here in the Philippines, being equivalent to about PhP 2.04 million in a year and PhP 170,000 per month.
Blogs will continue to gain steam as a formidable source of information and especially opinions. And those who earn from blogging activities–from the various forms of pro-blogging–will continue to thrive.
Work Smartr every day.
