Since my work involves all things new media, my wife suggested I get a new laptop as a backup device for those times when I need power and mobility. Apart from the Mac Mini I use as my main work machine, my two-year old Compaq V2000, and the Asus Eee I carry around almost anywhere, I do certainly think I need another one.
We’ve been eyeing several brands and models previously. And this included the new Acer Gemstone series. From experience, I wasn’t too keen with Acer laptops, given some (perceived) quality issues. I thought this would be fixed with the Gemstone. But some colleagues who have been using Acer Gemstone laptops say otherwise.
So we’re left with other brands. With a budget of PhP 50,000 or less (that’s about $1,200) I know the choices are a bit limited. We could get a Fujitsu or a Sony Vaio (usually costing PhP 100,000 plus)—expensive, but probably more durable and usable than others.
Any suggestions?

1I suggest get an hp pavillion or dell laptop, then upgrade the battery for power and mobility. Maybe a battery that can live from 6-12 hours.

2I highly recommend Lenovo’s ThinkPad line, I have a T43 and it’s wonderful, and I know many people that still swear by their T42’s.
They have strong build quality, and while aren’t the prettiest, they function well.
I also like my MacBook Pro. Its fairly reasonable and works well enough.
What do you want to do with the laptop though? I am assuming you want to do more than the EEE is capable of? A higher end HP or Dell might be up your alley.

3What issues did your friends have with their Gemstones? I have a 4520G gemstone and I’m quite happy with it.

4@Icy – I saw an ad for a 12.1” Dell Vostro at about PhP 50k. Dell has recently officially launched here (though their customer service and tech support has been outsourced here in the country for some time now).
@David – I know you do swear by your T43.
The Eee suits my needs when mobile. But at the office, sometimes I need something more powerful and faster. I could go for a MacBook. The MBP is a bit too pricey for me.
BTW, I used to be a ThinkPad loyalist, too!
@Jon – Overheating, actually, which tends to damage internals and RAM modules.

6I’m not sure how prices are in your part of the world, but I’d reckon a HP dv series laptop would do the trick, they’re pretty good looking too. All my Acer experiences (3 laptops + another 2 in the company) are very good though, quality stuff.
Lenovo gives you pretty much computer for your money, btw. Helped a friend shop a low budget one a month ago, nice C2D processor, 2 GB RAM and everything, for a very good price. I’m impressed. Good screen too.
