I love my Gmail
account. The thread-based interface rocks. Now I no longer
have to sift through mountains of messages (and spam!) to get what I
want. I can view by thread, and I can search by keyword/category.
These days, I rarely use my other email accounts, except for official business.
Thinking back, I got my gmail account through quite an interesting manner. I was sharing info on the BNC (tech) forums
on how to surf via GPRS for free. Of course, I did not openly
discuss this hack/workaround, but rather I asked people to email me for
info, so I could at least be selective with whom I give out the details
to. For all I know, lurkers from the concerned GSM networks could
be reading my posts (and Google does a good job of sniffing out info
through keywords).
In exchange for the info I shared, two of my co-forumers gave me Gmail invites. I used them to sign myself and Caren up.
Back then, Gmail users could only give out a maximum of 6 invitations
(this re-set back to 6 once every now and then), hence effectively
creating an artificially high demand for the service. Now it’s up
to 50 (and the number re-sets to 50 each time an invitee successfully
sets up his/her account). There’s still the exclusivity, but at
least it’s more accessible.
