There’s been quite a buzz in the tech world, with news that Apple is switching to Intel processors (and ditching IBM, which makes the PowerPC chips, in the process), and has even successfully designed an OS X flavor for the x86.

Here’s an interesting analysis from whatdoiknow.org, where Todd Dominey

talks on the implications of such a move.  Basically, “the silly

megahertz war will be over … the battle will no longer be about

platforms, but software.”

Personally, I’m pretty excited about this development, notwithstanding

the doubts and speculations that have been floated at this point.

Imagine being able to purchase

a single piece of hardware and have a choice of OSes: Windows, Linux, MacOS, and what-have-you.

Of course, I don’t expect to be able to install Mac OS X on my existing

machine–at least not in the immediate future–but the possibility (with perhaps newer processors) is something to look

forward to.

What if anyone with an existing x86-based machine–or at least from the

recent Pentiums/Celerons up–can install OS X?  Would this put a

dent to Microsoft’s domination in the personal computing arena?

I’ll be watching out for developments.
