Ever wonder about film ratings? Or are you curious as to why some films have been rated “R” (for Restricted)? Check out ScreenIt’s Parental Reviews. This site practically narrates, in a detailed manner, the potentially offensive material in a movie outlined into the following:

  • Alcohol/Drugs

  • Blood/Gore

  • Disrespectful/Bad Attitude

  • Frightening/Tense Scenes

  • Guns/Weapons

  • Imitative Behavior

  • Jump Scenes

  • Music (Scary/Tense)

  • Music (Inappropriate)

  • Profanity

  • Sex/Nudity

  • Smoking

  • Tense Family Scenes

  • Topics To Talk About

  • Violence

For instance, you’d like to know why exactly Brokeback Mountain got an R rating, you might want to check it out here (as if it wasn’t already obvious).

It might be difficult to access the site since it requires a membership to read most of the useful reviews (parental and artistic), but a good workaround is using Google’s site search. Simply log in to google and key in the following:

site:screenit.com

Then simply choose among the results to get your blow-by-blow scoop on how many sex scenes a movie actually has, or how many times the lead character cusses or takes drag off his cigarette, or how long, in seconds, this hot actress got to display a full frontal, or how many times Jake Gyllenhaal shows his butt.

OK, I’m exaggerating, but screenit’s practically got Spoiler Alert written all over it. And it seems the reviews were written by prudes who came straight out of the 1930’s–too cautious, and counting even the most mundane of acts as possibly “offensive material.”

I’m the sort of parent who would rather explain, in a rational manner, stuff to my kids, rather than keep them in the dark (which potentially does more harm than good). Trust me, people; my wife’s a pro–she’s into early childhood education and psychology.

At any rate, do check it out. The Articist Reviews are also OK.
