Just discovered that VOIP works with dialup after all–that is if you use
the GSM or iLDP codec (compression-decompression) with your
client. pulver Communicator supports these codecs, and so does Skype.
But Skype’s such a resource-hog (and a proprietary communicator unlike FWD, which is not client-dependent).
So there’s hope after all for
those of us who don’t have broadband at home.
Anyway, at the
office, I use SJPhone,
since it’s a lighter application . No bells and whistles, but it
works, and I like the straightforward interface! Sadly, the free
version doesn’t support the GSM and iLDP protocols (hence a broadband
conneciton is needed for the heavier codecs that feature better voice
quality). And at home, I use pulver whenever I find the need to
call via VOIP.
The whole family will be staying at Discovery Suites
this weekend! Another hotel weekend for the kids (and the
kids-at-heart) to enjoy. Will take Pia swimming if we have the
time.
