Okay, so I tried testing the approximate speed of my SkyDSL connection last night via speakeasy speedtest. I got 543 Kbps down and 479 Kbps up. But that’s in the middle of the night, with everyone on their ZZZ’s. I was probably sharing the pipes with only a handful of other night-owls and zombies.
And I think I forgot to turn off the http proxy access on my browser.
I tried testing again just around two this afternoon, and here’s what I got. With proxy disabled, I got a download speed of 508 Kbps and upload speed of 222 Kbps.

I then activated the Sky DSL Proxy (proxy.skyinet.net) and got these results: 500 Kbps down and 448 Kbps up.

So the download speed plays around 500 Kbps—pretty close to the 512 Kbps the published data rate. Understandably, upload speeds are slower, but in this case I was surprised it even surpassed the 200 Kbps mark (upload speeds are usually less than half or even less than 20% of the download speed). And with the http proxy, it’s likely that the proxy server’s upload speed is faster, hence attaining the near-500 Kbps rate for upstream transfers.
Not bad.
Of course, the speeds are only estimates, but then again, I would say such tests are a good proxy of how fast your connection really is.
I think this is something Smart WiFi (now branded Smart Bro) users should try.
Update: As of May 2007, Bayantel / Sky DSL has been reportedly really slow. I’ve experienced this myself, and I’ve published a copy of an email I sent to Bayantel CSR here:

2Mine’s the plan PhP 1,700 per month—that’s 512kbps. What’s great is that I bundled my Bayantel telephone subscription for only an additional PhP 300 per month, for atotal of PhP 2,000/mo.
That’s better than the PhP 900/mo DSL subscription, since the telephone line would be about PhP 900 per month (cannot be bundled with the lowest DSL plan), so the total amounts to PhP 1,800/mo.

3have you heard anything about the P899 package? i was thinking that if the P1700 package delivers 500kbps as advertised, id be happy with a 300+kbps speed for half the price – that is if it really is 300kbps. i currently have mydestiny at P1600 consistently getting speeds of 400/200 dl/ul (vs. advertised 500kbps, and id be willing to downgrade to 300kbps for 800bucks savings! also, any information on speeds during peak hours?

4I’m actually using the 899 package since I moved to this new apartment. Speed is 384 kbps during the day, and it goes up to about 768 during nighttime (using speed on demand). However, I have a trick/hack wherein I get up to 768 kbps during the day, but still paying PhP 899! (You’d have to email me for that!)
The 1,700 package has been upgraded to 768 kbps standard speed and 1+ mbps during offpeak/nighttime hours.
Anyway, I think the 899 package is even more worth it if you get the bundled landline subscription for only an additional PhP 300. So with PhP 1,199 you already get a landline+DSL subscription (you even have caller ID, call waiting, etc.).
Bayantel should pay me for this!

6Skydsl 384@ 899
I had a skydsl for more than 4 months now, and it is better than smartBro which I had for 1 year before i terminated the service, the only issue I have right now is the intermettent train especially during peak hours, and I need to powercycle the modem every an hour worst every 30 minutes.
Do you have this issue as well?

7Hey guys… what is the fastest speed connection available in Philippines? I am currently in US and by reading your posts here, it freaks me out by reading the downloading speed of the net in Philippines that is less than 1Mbps. I am planning to go back to Philippines and just continue my online business there but it worries me alot if the internet connection is too slow. Right now, I am having a download speed of 11675 Mbps and if you guys only have less than 1Mbps, it will take me 30 minutes of my less than a minute download here… what a pain in the ass… :((
Any input from you guys would be appreciated.

8@Richard, I do believe residential connections can get as fast as 2Mbps for DSL and about 4Mbps for cable (sometimes cable companies don’t cap their speeds, so it can perhaps go as high as 10Mbps as long as you don’t have a bunch of neighbors downloading torrents at the same time!).
How much does your 11Mbps subscription cost?
Andre
February 22nd, 2007 at 5:43 pm
9@richard, Really there is 11mbps speed in US? As far as I know the maximum speed that ISP can offer for cable is 10mbps, that is for Cox communication I dont know for Verizon.
If you are going to put up a business here, it would be better if you can select a good ISP, hopefully your able to find one, hehehehe
Regards,
Richard

10I have the comcast cable internet and it’s really, really fast. the company only advertise that they only have 5Mbps but lately, they upgraded it to 7Mbps but most of the time, the download speed top up to 12-13 Mbps. Currently, I am paying less than $50 for this connection.

11i might be asking the wrong people but i just had my skydsl installed last night and i wasn’t home.. which means i missed the chance to ask the tech questions about the account/service. i signed up for the Php899/mo package.
i just wanted to know if the service includes email (and how many) and where i can access the webmail for the service. also, i needed to know how i can change the password to the dialler as the tech assigned the username and password to be the same, since i wasn’t home to choose a preferred password.
i called up their customer service hotline to ask about this but they said they’re system is down so they can’t view my account…
can anyone help me please?

12Hi Dom. It’s the default setting: username=password. You can call up 411-2000 to have your password changed.
As for webmail, I’m not so sure if they still offer this service. I’m not so fond of ISP-provided mail, since you will inevitably lose this account if and when you transfer ISPs. I recommend Gmail or even Gmail for domains (if you have your own domain).

15I have a question, how much is the monthly fee for a 512 kbps sky dsl bundles with a phone line? I’m confused because the info posted on the website are contradicting.
J. Angelo Racoma
April 11th, 2007 at 9:22 am
16@Eva, as of today, it’s PhP 899 per month for DSL + PhP 300 for the bundled phone, so a total of PhP 1,199.
It used to be PhP 1699 per month before they upgraded speeds. Now the PhP 1699 plan is for the 768Kbps plan.
@Andre, thanks for that info.
@Andy, I replied to you (last week) via email.

17Oh, okay… cuz in their website, the 1,199 package is for 384 kbps. And then when I was reading the online application form, the only available packages are 256 kbps, 712 kbps, and 2 mbps. It’s quite confusing.
What sky dsl package are you using now?

19I have a question re: skyDSL + phone package (899 + 300 bundle). In the online application, the speed for this package is 512 kbps but when I inquired through their customer service they said that the speed for this package is only 384 kbps with a speed on demand option. When you applied for this package, was your internet speed 384 kbps or 512 kbps even without speed on demand?

27the bayantel promised speed is based on local web sites. they do not have the same speed for international sites. try watching a video online and if you can watch it without buffering you have good connection speed. i have bayantel and i have to wait ten f^$*ing minutes to watch a 3 minute video. thats not dsl speed! one way to find out your speed is by watching the bayantel pppoe status (thats the blue tv icon on the tool bar tray) and see if you are receiving more than 30,000 bytes per second in international sites. try it on you tube! is there anything we can do about this??

30Sorry for the very late reply for the person who was quite amazed that there’s 11 Mbps speed in US. Yes, there is, the Comcast upgraded their speed lately. Their speed sometimes tops up to 13 Mbps and most of the time it’s 11 Mbs, that depends if you have a lot of people sharing the cable connection in your area.
Currently I am in Philippines and I have a 2.2 Professional plan from PLDT which costs about P3000 a month. It’s quite more expensive than what I am paying in US but there’s nothing I can do. The speed actually is ok but access the FTP on my web server is too slow for this kind of plan. I am not so sure if this problem belongs to PLDT or my web host.
Anyway, I just found out in Cavite that cable internet is not that bad either especially if you are uploading a file to your webhost. Most of the time, the upload speed for the FTP tops up to 60 Kbps compare to 28 Kbps of PLDT.
This is quite crazy but I really need to find out on which end here has the problem.

31How is the service and speed of Sky Cable’s internet service (ZPDee)?
I have Smartbro right now, but looking for better/faster alternatives.
Also, does anybody know what needs to be done in our building to be able to get Platinum Service from Sky Cable? I was told that the service was not available in our building.
Thanks.

34Hi nikko. That depends on where you are located. I am currently in Philippines and I have the professional package of PLDT which is 2.2 Mbps.
With regards to the connection of 512 kbps between sky and pldt, you should know what neighborhood you are in and what type of internet connection your area uses. If you have cable connection and a lot of the neighborhood uses the same internet provider, that will make your connection significantly slow compare to the dsl of pldt. But if only a few people uses the same provider, cable connections runs faster than the DSL connection. And according to the information I gathered when I was still in US. if you use cable and you are quite far from the distribution point, the connection is a little bit slower but that’s not really very significant (that means, not noticeable).
What I noticed here in Philippines, ftp on cable runs fater than the dsl. but since most people here just surf the net, then ftp speed is not a problem (unlike my case that I really need the fastest ftp connection possible.)

39Hi Sir J, I am subscribed to Sky DSL plan 256 before and then upgraded it to 384 (same price).
My Problem is there is almost no change to my speed ( only 260+kbps on tests) I thought that maybe my slow computer is the factor. (windows xp celeron 2.13 ghz, 512 ddr ram). But i tried to ask my friend who is also a sky dsl subscriber to test my username and password ( he has a Intel dual core 3.0 ghz, 1 gb ram) and it also marked 260+kbps (480-500 kbps on sod).
I tested his Username and passord on my pc and it marked 330+ kbps! (700+ on sod) (were both on the same plan). So i sent bayantel an e-mail but they called and told me that my speed (260 kbps) is just on the allowable range for 384 kbps (50 kbps and above)and there is nothing that they can do about it.
So hows that! do i need to wait for my speed to drop as fast as dial-up for them to fix my account??? how i wish to turn back the time and just subscribe to them after the 384 kbps announcement!
(could you please e-mail me ways on how to double the speed at daytime cause i really need speed! I am a cs student and i need to get the speed that i am paying for cause i usually download lesson files from my classmates and from my proffessors. tnx!=))

The representative told me that there is an upgrade on my account but maybe it is not yet configured so they asked me to wait. Then, they told me that my account was reset and asked me to test it. I got 360+ kbps on the test! Thankyou so much! I think i called the wrong guys because it is the number for bayantel dsl, not sky dsl. Thankyou so much! 46hi mr. J. wanna ask this question: if my aunt subscribes to bayantel dsl 1199, is it possible for me to share or use her username and password to my own pc (without using any gadget or cable connection, just entering her username and password?). pls help me….tnx!
J. Angelo Racoma
July 9th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
47@Lani, I don’t think so. While it used to be that people can share usernames (and therefore those with lower plan subscriptions can connect at higher speeds), your bayantel line won’t be able to connect via DSL if it doesn’t have provisioning for DSL in the first place. This means Bayantel would need to activate DSL on your line (or something to that effect) before you can even login via PPP.
Does your aunt live anywhere near your place? If she’s just a neighbor, then perhaps you can try using a WiFi router to share the connection. Just be sure both ends are in range.
Actually, the steps I listed in the first few lines are the “secret” to getting faster speeds.

48mr. J, i already have router 4-port and a cable wire but we don’t know how to make connections. Can you give me some brief details pls…...
