I just finished watching Episode 4 of Smallville Season 6. Arrow is, IMHO, one of the more exciting Smallville episodes because it doesn’t deal with a meteor FOTW (freak of the week), and because it tries to explore the beginnings of what would be the future Justice League (sneak peeks were also shown when Aquaman and the Flash guested in earlier seasons).

This time, the guest hero is Oliver Queen, a.k.a. the Green Arrow. Oliver Queen’s character will be around for quite some time in this season as I’m looking forward to more action. Guys will love Ollie’s gadgets and vehicles, while girls will, well, probably love Justin Hartley.

In Arrow, Oliver makes his first official appearance in costume as Smallville’s Green Arrow. Doing so, he becomes one of the first characters in the series to fight crime in a costume, and the only pre-existing/guest-starring DC comics superhero to do so. He wears a modernized revision of his costume from comics. Though his trademark hood and armbands remain, there are noticible changes. He lacks a domino mask and hat, the former replaced with a pair of high-tech sunglasses that can zoom in and out, lock onto targets, and is equiped with nightvision. He also sports a more high-tech version of his bow, which can transform into a grappling hook device, and sports a miniature crossbow handgun, which also has grappling hook attachment. As Green Arrow, he steals black market items away from the rich. He also utilizes a voice synthesizer. Oliver learns of Clark’s abilities after a brief struggle between the two, when Clark arrives to stop another theft.

In an upcoming episode, titled Justice, Oliver will begin to form a “Justice League”, though it will not be officially referred to as that, which will be composed of heroes who previously guest starred on Smallville: Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash (Bart Allen).

I won’t bother much with the synopsis of this episode, as Wikipedia seems to have beaten me to it, though I’ve been editing some of the Smallville-related enries there (I’ll probably have to contribute in improving this one). I’d like to add, though, that here we see Lois exploring her journalistic side. Somehow I feel the producers are making good with their stand that Chloe Sullivan will not turn into Lois Lane somehow in the future, and they’re showing this more and more as the show progresses.

Lionel hosts a small party for Martha and her bid for U.S. Senate, and he loans her a priceless necklace. A mysterious thief crashes the party and steals the necklace from Martha. After a confrontation with Lois, he manages to make a getaway, but not before Lois grabs a small ring from his neck. Clark finally meets Oliver when he comes to Metropolis to find the necklace. Lois believes she’s landed a new front page story with the Inquisitor, but her plans are spoiled when the thief comes back for the ring. Lois still writes her article, naming him the “Green Arrow Bandit”. With a little help from Lionel, Clark figures out Green Arrow’s next target and confronts him. After a brief fight, Green Arrow makes an escape as Clark is forced to help an injured guard. Lex’s darker side seems to be influencing Lana, as she blackmails one of his employees from “contracting out” to Lionel. It all turns out to be a game orchestrated by Lex to test Lana’s loyalty. When Lois is kidnapped, Green Arrow comes to her rescue. Clark figures out the truth, and saves Green Arrow’s identity from being revealed to Lois. Clark comes home to find Oliver waiting for him. After returning the necklace he took, he leaves Clark with some words of wisdom about how there is an entire world out there and he cannot wait for those people to find him for help.

How to Download Smallville Season 6 Episode 4: Arrow

When it comes to piracy and copyright, I consider myself to be in the grey areas in between. I don’t exactly condone piracy, but I’m not exactly too hot for closed copy protection, either. Now the reason I’m downloading Smallville episodes is that I know these will not be shown in the Philippines anytime soon (our guess is that it will take Studio 23 about six months after the September 2006 premiere on the CW network). So this Smallville fan (who’s appearing frontpage on Google for relevant queries) has no other choice but to download.

In fact, I do believe artists and copyright holders can explore better business models with giving away content free online and earning from sponsorships and ad revenue (hey, this is what they do on free TV anyway). At the very least, the availability of such shows for online download is indicative that there is a strong following and it’s not limited to a few countries only.

Hey, even Smallville had for-download only featurettes entitled the Chloe Chronicles . These were sponsored by Accuvue, which actually had some screen time in one of Season 5’s episodes, Avenger .

If you agree with me, download the torrent file here and load it up on your BitTorrent client. If you don’t have a torrent client yet, I recommend Azureus.

If you don’t agree with me, well you can wait until next year to get your Smallville fix.

Now For Some Screencaps!

Green Arrow
You see, Miss Lane, I do use deodorant. And I do shave my underarms!

Lana and Lex
It was great whining to you while jogging, Lex!

Ollie and Lois
My costume is way cooler than that Clark Kent/Superman guy. Besides, you don’t get to date him until he grows up to be Dean Cain. And who would fall in love with a guy who wears his underwear outside?

Lois with a Bow
Put your hands up! I’d like to see ‘em underarms again.

At the loft
You know, Lana has Lex now. And Chloe’s with Jimmy. Lois doesn’t like you (yet). Why don’t we take this opportunity to be together?

Product placement of the week:

  • Blackberry
  • Some unidentifiable Samsung phones

Enjoy!

Go download Episode 3, Anya! :) You’ll notice striking differences in direction and cinematography between the two episodes. Wither carries the bright tint/halo effect characteristic of Smallville, while Arrow is darker. Also, do notice the use of Batman style score in Green Arrow scenes.

@Angelo: Hehe, that’s because they really can’t use Bruce Wayne at all. We’ve requested it to one of the writers (blog.myspace.com/stevendeknight) but he said no-can-do to that one as long as Smallville is running sigh. That’s why most probably they used that score, to somehow ease the Bruce Wayne fans, hehehe :D
