When Globe came out with Visibility, I thought to myself that would be a great thing to have. Imagine wireless broadband anywhere (anywhere there is a 3G / HSDPA signal, of course). But the cost at PhP 2,000 per month (with a few Gigs limit at that) was a bit steep, considering I already subscribe to residential DSL and also to an unlimited Airborne Access account.
Enter Smart 3G / GPRS, with PhP 10 per 30-minute charging, and I found it was a good backup system when I’m in areas without decent (or free) WiFi coverage. At least this could work with prepaid, and I won’t be locked into long-term contracts.
Sure it’s not blazingly fast. You max out at 384 Kbps. But considering you’re mobile (and not likely downloading Gigabytes and Gigabytes of files), I think that’s sufficient. Works okay with VoIP and even video chatting.
Smart recently introduced an “anywhere Internet” plan under their Smart Bro brand. Thing is, the introductory marketing material said you get 60 hours for PhP 799 a month. So that’s about PhP 13 per 30 minutes, or approximately a 40% savings over prepaid. In excess of that you pay the usual rates of PhP 10 per 30 minutes.
Thing is, I talked to a marketing rep earlier today, and she clarified that the initial announcement was wrong. They give you 40 hours for the PhP 799 plan. that means you still pay the equivalent of PhP 10 per 30 minutes, but with a one-peso saving per month.
So instead of spending about PhP 800 for the same amount of online time (i.e., at PhP 20 per hour), you spend PhP 799.
40 HOURS FREE per MONTH!
- Initial Payment – P1,999 (upon subscription)
- Monthly Fee – P799 only
- In excess of 40 hours will be charged P10 per block of 30 minutes.
I would rather stick to my prepaid plan, considering I’ve already bought myself an LG KU250 to serve as a 3G modem. The KU250 is affordable enough at PhP 6,000. That’s cheap for a 3G-enabled phone (cheap on the price, but I think the value exceeds my expectations).
Now the advantage of this Smart Bro plan is you get the Huawei USB modem for just PhP 1,999 (whereas the modem sells for upwards of PhP 10,000 outside of this subsidy). That in itself makes it worth to subscribe to Smart Bro with this USB plan.
Still, one advantage with my using my 3G phone to use as modem, I have one advantage—I can surf without opening my laptop (or ultraportable computer, as is the case with the Asus Eee). I can just open Opera Mini and work from there. Of course, this is just for those emergency cases where I really need to connect, but don’t have the luxury of sitting down somewhere to open my laptop.
So, what do you think? Is the Smart Bro USB plan worth it?

1Uhm, the 1-peso saving per month really amounts to nothing nowadays.
It really boils down to personal preference really. It’s either you buy a really cheap 3G phone or subscribe to Smart’s new service.
One things is very crucial though, one must have a laptop to begin with.

2I was thinking of availing of the new plan..it’s just that i’m able to connect to the internet using my n80 as modem at a speed of 460.8kbps at Php10 for 30 minutes.so I’m kind of torn in between.
but like you said, the modem might just be worth it.

3Nah. If you’re always on the go and don’t want a drained cellphone battery, this new thing probably deserves a second look. Otherwise, your (and my) cellphone connected through Smart 3G is IMO the best and cheapest way to go.

4Arnold, plugging in the KU250 via bluetooth actually charges the phone. It will add to the laptop’s battery drain, though. Still I think it will be almost the same with the Huawei E220 modem.

5Smart 3G blocks various ports, so with this plan are those ports not blocked anymore?

7The lock-in period of 24 months is also a downside to Smart Bro Plan 799.

8we’re considering smart wirelss as an alternative to pldt’s weroam, which has since put in a few blocks since its first incarnation. when my boss got the first weroams, the ones with the antenna, he could surf and replicate his notes database while cruising along the nlex. with the new ones (sans antenna) he can’t do so anymore. If the smart wireless is as good as (or even better than) the orig weroam, it could be the answer for us.

9At first, I thought “internet anywhere” was an unlimited internet access. I don’t think it’s practical to subscribe with Smart USB plan. You get to pay 799 a month, but you only have 40 hours of free access/mo. That’s roughly 1 hr & 30 minutes a day for 30 days. I don’t think I would enjoy surfing 1 hr & 30 minutes everyday and get billed for 799 monthly.
If you consume 40 hours of free usage/mo. within just a week or a few days, you’ll get charged P10.00 per 30 minutes. Most of the time, I’d stay connected for more than 5 hours of internet access a day. I don’t want to pay 799 of this very LIMITED internet access and pay for P10.00 for every succeeding 30 minutes, I really don’t think I’d only use 30 minutes a day in excess of that free 40 hours internet access, let’s say I would only use 30 minutes in excess thereof. that’s about 300/mo, so 300+799=1099. :’( I’d rather use my 3g phone as a modem to access internet (SMART Internet), with that I can go online with the limit I know I have in my pocket and need not to worry the monthly bill.
Happy new year everyone!!

10Smart Bro’s Service is beyond description…
We’ve a business account…. AND STILL SUCKS
MEGA SUCKS…
They managed to reconfigure the buildings router and all tenants were offline.
The Tech Support wasted half my day running completely useless tests trying to proof that our LAN is the source of the problem. They can’t handle anything else than Windows and the right hand doesn’t know what the left hand is doing…
Offline for three days and the technician vanishes on the way to the appointment… waited for hours.
Never experienced such a unprofessional company
HANDS OFF

!
SIGN UP FOR ANYTHING BUT SMART BRO…

11P2,000 a month is half month’s salary for many ordinary laborers. Internet at this time will remain an illusive dream to millions of Filipinos.

12many ordinary laborers don’t need the internet to be connected, usually a cellphone will do. if they really want to be connected, P700-1000 DSL packages are available in the market.
business people who need a mobile connection with higher bandwidths are the ones that usually avail these services. i would not avail these services for home use either. too buggy and unstable for my taste.

17I rather stick to cellphone in connecting to internet. It’s much cheaper and it does not bind me to any lockin period. I get 115.2kbps connection speed while smartbro only reach up to 100kbps not commited. Mas mura ang cellphone thru GPRS or 3G. I use SonyEricson K608i and Nokia 3220. mabilis pa ang connection. Yun nga lang, it needs to be positioned where signal don’t deteriorate. Hahahahahaha. Lets all pray na malugi sana ang smart. Hahahahhaha. Take note nga pala. Any download cost another charge maliban sa 10 pesos per 30 min. or 20 pesos per hour. Kitams???? in any way or another lugi parin tayo.

Mukhang nilalangaw ah!
So kun maging prepaid na yung Smart Bro799 paano na yung sumabak sa kanilang with 2 years contract plan?
Roy

24Further, kahit celfone or the Smart Bro modem ang gagamitin mo parang walang pinag kaiba. So kung meron ka nag ceflone modem sa Smart bakit pa kailangan maginvest sa bagong pakulo ng Smart Tel?
Any opinions?

25Hi guys. I’m currently using my nokia 6233 as a modem, via smart 3g. It’s currently connected to my pc through bluetooth.
I’m getting pretty good connection considering this is a wireless stuff..
Anyway I just want to ask how the metering of smart 3g works.. It says that you will be charged 10 pesos for 30 min right? But how come Im connected for almost 3 hours now with my prepaid balance only 30 pesos? We’ll i’m just wondering if its 10 pesos an hour…

26Right now I’m here in Saudi using the USB Modem and here for just 150 rials is unlimited internet connection, I wonder how why SMART BRO offering limited connectio only for very expensive price. The SMART BRO is really suck,I’m one of the first user where they implement it actually this is MERIDIAN before then SMART bought it and become SMART BRO. Sa MERIDIAN pa lang eh sira na services nila palagi kong minumura support nila di hamak na mas marunong pa ako sa mga tech guys nila and I suggest better to DSL line rather than Wireless Connection

27Im using an N82 as a smart gprs modem as we speak and mabagal. just talked to SMART customer service kanina and they told me pareho lang yung speed ng smart bro prepaid usb modem at ng gprs cellphone modem-all dependent sa signal. No need to buy an additional Php4,500 usb modem ng smart bro prepaid which they reluctantly admitted to me when I quizzed them. One warning though, you can’t use your phone for calls or sms while using it as a modem.Out of reach ka. Thats the only down side I can think of… well… drained cellphone battery too if mobile ka. Thats why I forego any plans of availing any wireless broadband services globe or smart for now.Guess the internet cafes will still have a share of my internet doughs…Hope this info will help somebody.

29Hi guys,
I am using my fone as a modem for my internet in my laptop, Nokia 5310 music edition ung fone and ndi 3G, GPRS lng gamit ko para kumonek and I think masasabi kong pwede na.. althogu ang bagal nya.. 420kbps.. ung Smart Bro na Plan 799 at ung prepaid nila, at ung fne ko.. same lng dw ang speed ng connection.. kaya why buy the 4,500 modem and lock-in period of 2years for the plan kung gnun dn ang speed. Might as well bili na lang kyo ng 3G fone, mas mabilis xa as long as full bar ung signal mo.. mas ok..
Hope this helps..

38I’m not sure about those prepaids…If you have a pc and a mobile phone, why not use the phone as a modem to connect to the net?
I want to try this type of connection I’m not sure if my nokia 660 is capable of doing it.
If it does, can anyone tell me how to configure the phone to use a modem?
My sim is smart communications. Please tell me how please reply on my e-mail. Thx.
