Telco squatting

BernieJ of Talking Tech has an interesting article on what he calls telco squatting.

Recently, some enterprising individuals are taking advantage of the unlimited voice calls that SUN Cellular provides. They have set up some sort of a cellphone-to-landline patch that allows SUN Cellular subscribers to … call any landline number … indefinitely–as if they are talking with fellow SUN Cellular subscribers. These enterprising individual charges a flat monthly fee for the use of their “service”.

I’m not so sure about the legal aspects of this, but I do remember that Sun Cellular took some action on some groups doing a similar phone-patch setup for international calls through VoIP.

Maybe it’s the setups like these that cause the severe network congestions of Sun Cellular.

At any rate, I’d say these setups are all right as long as it’s intended for personal uses. But if the concerned individual/s or entities are starting to charge for their “service,” as if they were a telco themselves, then that’s a different thing altogether.
