I’ve never really been a Smallville fan as some people I know are (there are computer geeks, and there are comics geeks, and there are Smallville geeks, and geeks of all kinds). However, a few weeks back, I chanced upon a Season 5 DVD set and thought I’d catch up on the episodes. I was able to watch many of the previous seasons episodes on TV (Studio 23, Tuesday evenings) but that’s just about it. However, the summer (northern hemisphere) release of Superman Returns rekindled an interest in the series and so here I am finding myself watching a couple of episodes each dawn after publishing my blog posts for the day.

However to my disappointment, the set I bought was not complete. By now, you probably know that I have a bootlegged copy, since the original Fifth Season DVD set is not set to be released until this September. It only has up to Ep. 15 (Cyborg), so I have yet to watch the most exciting parts, probably the best of which is the season finale.

Highlights

Season 5 is considered to be a turning point in the series for several reasons. Some highlights:

  • The Fortress of Solitude has been formed, and is Kal-El’s (Clark) link to his biological father, Jor-El. It is here where Kal-El is supposed to undergo his training (as depicted in Superman I.
  • Clark tries to have a real relationship with Lana after briefly losing his powers and thinking he’d start to have a normal life from that point (yes, they get to do the deed. Finally!).
  • Chloe discloses to Clark she’d been aware of his secret identity for some time now and Clark now treats her as his confidante and the person he turns to for help and advice when it comes to his saving-the-world activities and his relationship with Lana (much to Chloe’s chagrin, as she does have feelings for Clark).
  • Clark finally gets to share his secret with Lana, but not without repercussions (and the concept of time travel is great, in this case).
  • Clark’s adoptive dad, Jonathan Kent dies of cardiac arrest briefly after winning a senate seat against Lex Luthor.
  • Visitors from Krypton arrive (Professor Fine—or an interpretation of Braniac—and General Zod), intent to destroy the world as we know it.
  • Several swimsuit scenes with Lana, Lois and Chloe. One episode even has Lois posing as a stripper at an affluent men’s club. Booyah! Smallville is not for kids.
  • Season 5 is also the season for Chlark (i.e., Chloe+Clark) fans, particularly because of Chloe’s new status as Clark’s confidant (traditionally the role of Pete Ross in the comic books) culminating in yet another kiss during the season finale. Fans would argue that Lana is too whiny and that Lois, well, she hates Clark, and that Chloe is the one devoted to him. There are even “Chlois” theories that consider Chloe to actually be the Lois of the future. I tend to agree. Whatever.

Episode summaries are available on Wikipedia.

DVD?

So anyway, if you do have the rest of the season on DVD or on your hard drives, I would appreciate it a copy :). It’s a pretty long wait until September 12th. For now, there’s always YouTube (video quality sucks, though).

Think science. Science think.
