Some innovative invention ideas:

  • Macrowave cooler – akin to how a microwave oven heats up food (and other matter) by exciting water molecules, the macrowave should quicken the freezing/cooling process in a similar manner. Useful for cooling that bottle of Champagne during those unexpected moments.

  • Mental floss – For cleaning in between the ears. Or some sort of device that would help take out undesirable thoughts and ideas from one’s mind. Similar to how dental floss clears in between teeth. (Or does this already exist in the form of lobotomies?)

It seems that someone beat me to it, or at least to proposing the idea in a public forum. Doing a google search on “macrowave” took me to whynot.net, which contained an entry for “Instant Cold”, a device that “triggers an intense endothermic reaction to instantly cool your drink to the perfect temperature when it’s opened. And this was posted way back in October of 2003.

Talk about innovative thinking. Or is it wishful thinking? After all, many of today’s innovations were brought about not by genius, but by accident. Take the microwave oven, for instance. Microwaves were used for various military and civilian purposes before the idea of using it for culinary purposes came about. As history would have it,

during a radar-related research project around 1946 … Dr. Percy Spencer, a self-taught engineer with the Raytheon Corporation, noticed something very unusual. He was testing a new vacuum tube called a magnetron, when he discovered that the candy bar in his pocket had melted. This intrigued Dr. Spencer, so he tried another experiment. This time he placed some popcorn kernels near the tube and, perhaps standing a little farther away, he watched with an inventive sparkle in his eye as the popcorn sputtered, cracked and popped all over his lab.

So this goes to show that the next big thing may just be around the corner. It’s just a matter of either innovative thinking or accidental encounters!  I could still wait for the mobile phone in my pocket to melt …
