‘Net connectivity spawns a new occupation. Credit it to Pinoy ingenuity. A commentary by Cheryl R. Chua on INQ7.net’s
Youngblood talks on how some Filipino women are taking advantage of
technology to earn big bucks. And this is not your typical
e-commerce type setup. They seek out friendly (or horny?) men
(usually westerners) from chatrooms, befriend them, and then subtly seek financial assistance. Some even set up multiple identities and “befriend” as many as five unsuspecting foreigners.
Yan ang Pinay! Somehow,
it’s understandable for individuals who are entangled in the
vicious cycle of poverty to seek out better means to eke out a
living. Unfortunately for the Filipina-at-large, such practices
contribute
to the worsening of the status of Filipinas in cyberspace. Several Filipino bloggers started Yan ang Pinay, an “informal campaign to change the top search engine results for the word ‘Filipina,’” which would usually render something about mail-order brides or online girlfriends.

It’s basically about blogging about “Filipina,” which would most likely
climb the search-engine ladders and eventually bump down the
unscrupluous sites selling the idea of Filipinas as mail-order-brides.
Talk about the power of blogs.
